Theodore did not have a Dawn Service this year, so our neighbours made a fire and four couples attended our own Dawn Service around the campfire whilst listening to the Sydney service. Forgot to take a photo. We didn’t feel like going back to bed so packed up and left 6:45 am.
Our first stop was at Moura for breakfast in the van beside the Miners Memorial and painted water tower. Mornos was had at Beazley Park at Rolleston. There is a coffee van in the park that does a roaring trade with all the nomads, so much so that we decided to brew up in the van to avoid the queue. We took a short stroll around the one block that makes up the most of functional Rolleston before moving on.
Next stop was for fuel at Emerald. We also had a light lunch stop just outside Emerald. As we spent two nights here late last year, we did not feel the need to stay here again. Onwards to Anakie, or so we thought. Wendy found a Donation Camp at this place called Bogantungan so we decided to check it out. We thought it would be choccas as the free camp just outside Springsure was “standing room only”, however, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find the place void of caravanners. We arrived just after 2:30 pm and set up camp and had a cuppa beside the old railway station.
On 26 Feb 1960, Bogantungan became the site of one of QLDs worst train disasters. The Midlander passenger train heading to Rockhampton passed over a flooded Medway Creek bridge that gave way and a number of carriages fell into the water. Four people died and 43 were injured.
For the first time on this trip we had the opportunity to out the drone up, which attracted the neighbours. Not great pics, as we still have our “L” plates on. We did try to put it up at Chinchilla, but got a warning about flying in restricted airspace as the airport was adjacent the camping area so Wendy chickened out and put the drone back to bed.
Hopefully we will be in Barcaldine tomorrow.
