We were well rugged up for our walks this morning, that sneaky breeze! We took our time getting on the road this morning and only left at 8:45 am. First stop was at Comet Vale Historic Town Site, or what is left of it. All we could find was a lot of red dirt, a tree festooned with tins of various sizes hanging in the branches and not much else. Moving right along. Stopped again a few km down the road to see the abandoned Goongarrie Railway Houses which were once part of a thriving community. The very old story of boom and bust in the gold mining game continues. Plenty of new gold mines in this area, they all appear to be open cut. There are also many drilling rigs scattered around the countryside, obviously looking for another place to dig a very big hole. It wasn't long before we were stopping for mornos at the Baden Powell Mine Rest Area.
It was only another 50 km or so to Kalgoorlie so we were checked-in and set up on our HUGE site (#38) just after 11 am. The floor mats were taking on a very rid tinge so they went in the wash. They came up rather nicely; all the white bits are white again! Lunch followed and then we did a large grocery shop at Woolies.
After an afternoon cuppa, Greg went for a ride around town to reacquaint himself with the layout. We were last here in 2016. It was raining and cool then too, one would think we would have learnt about WA winters. Due to the various borders slamming shut around the country because of COVID, Wendy decided to do some number crunching on which would be the best way home. The shortest option would add over 1 700 km to our original travel plans if QLD continues to shut their border with NSW. Of course it all may change at anytime, including locking us out altogether.
We're not concerned, nothing to rush home to. Time for dinner.
