Day 60: Sat 19 Jun - Kununurra to Wyndham, 104 km; total towed: 5 777 km

16-31 degC, quite a strong breeze in the afternoon at Wyndham

Today was a very easy day as far as driving goes, great road, plenty of rest areas and only 104 km.  We got away about 8 am and travelled only 2 km to our first stop, the local markets.  It didn't take long to check it all out and buy some yummy homemade bread, a very dark rye and a rustic fruit loaf.

We stopped at a rather large rest area/free camp at the junction of Hwy 1 and the Great Northern Hwy for a brew and some of that lovely fruit loaf.  It wasn't long before we were pulling into the caravan park at Wyndham, 10:30 am.  Got ourselves a great grassy site underneath some great gum trees.

After setting up we headed out on the bikes to explore the local area.   Ended up having a pie (brekky pie for W and barra pie for G) each for lunch at the bakery and staying on to chat with a couple from Adelaide.  Wyndham is a bit sad, having once thrived, a lot of businesses are now closed and boarded up.  Possibly due to the closure of the Meat Works in 1985. However, it is still an interesting place to visit and use as a base to do some day trips within the local area (we were told by two couples on our Lake Argyle cruise that Wyndham could be seen in half an hour, they obviously went around with their eyes shut). After lunch at the bakery, we thought we might like to ride up to the Five Rivers Lookout, however, about 1km into the ride we soon realised that a lookout is commonly on top of a monster hill, so turned around and headed out to the port and fishing jetty/boat ramp. Unfortunately, we couldn't get to where we could see trucks unloading what is presumed to be nickel, onto the awaiting ship. The port also used to export live cattle.

Tomorrow we will head out in the Cruiser. We did want to head to El Questro after Wyndham, however, they are all booked up and cannot guarantee an unpowered site even. Next time we are planning to be in the area, we will book some of these places well in advance. There may be a few other places we may have to bypass, such as Broome and 80 Mile Beach.

No pub here in Wyndham, so had home-made pizzas instead.

Wrap-up and Reflections

We have been so busy since arriving home that it has taken us two weeks to get around to our ‘wrap up’ of the trip.   It was so nice to be...
