Day 7: Tue 27 Apr - Barcaldine

11 (feels like 8) - 29 degC, another gorgeous day in QLD

We woke to the sound of galloping horses this morning. Race horses and jockeys were doing their early morning track work on the racetrack next door.  We should have went over for a tip.

On his morning walk Greg found that it must be thirsty business living in the outback as Barcy  currently has four pubs, all within spitting distance of each other.  Although by the look of them they are struggling and need some TLC.  At onc stage it had 11 pubs, most of which eventually burnt down.  It’s not surprising that they burnt as they were made out of wood and usually accommodated drunk people who smoked; a fatal combination for old wooden buildings.  The remaining four could do with some heritage work as they are a little run down.

Whilst Wendy worked this morning, Greg went riding around Barcy. After lunch we both drove for fuel, groceries and gas.  We then did the Heritage Trail walk around Barcy. Many of the more interesting sites/places were no longer standing, just the explanations were there.

Every early morning and late afternoon we are reminded that we're in the Outback as 1 000s of galahs and corellas congregate before either going about their business for the day or going to roost. It's a great spectacle but near impossible to capture in a photo. In between the horses and birds, there's no sleeping in. Not that Greg wants to, he is out walking well before the sun comes up, and Wendy is not too far behind.

Cycling is a very special part of our lives (well Greg’s anyway) and we rarely go on holidays without bikes being involved.  We had a bike rack fitted to the back of the van when it was made so we never go caravaning without the bikes on board. Where we’re going determines which bikes we take.  This trip Wendy decided on her Merida touring bike, she's not keen on MTBing, while Greg took his 29 inch Giant XTC full carbon hard tail MTB.  The hardtail is fast enough for the paths and road, it is there if he wants to go bush bashing.

A lovely end to a great day, sitting outside eating dinner and watching the rugby on the floodlit oval.  A glass of chateau de chateau was the icing on the cake.
