Day 37: Thu 27 May - Jabiru (Kakadu National Park)

20-32 degC, not quite as warm nor humid today, a strong breeze kept the heat down

Today we are very happy because everything was open.  We drove South to visit the Burrungkuy (aka Nourlangie) region of the KNP.  First stop was at the Kunwarddewardde lookout site, where we walked about 3 km and were treated to an amazing lookout after some fantastic rock art.

Next stop was at Nawurlandja where we hiked up what seemed to be a near vertical rock to get another speccy view of the park. We also did the Anbangbang Billabong walk, which was OK, but nothing to really write home about. That hike and wander gave us a total of 1.5 km. We had our homemade brews, (no cafes out there) kept nice and hot in our "Yeti" mugs that Terry and Leandra gave us before we left.  It's fantastic how they keep the coffee piping hot two hours after we made them in the van.  Just the shot for washing down the muelsi bars at a picnic table before moving on. Thank you, T&L, the mugs are magnificent.

Last walk of the day was out to the Nanguluwurr art site. Book said 3.4 km round trip, sign said 4 km, Map My Ride said 4.2 km. It was quite an easy walk until the last 200 m, when you had to become a mountain goat again. However, the rock art that was at this site was by far the standout.  Every time we see this stuff we wonder what they were actually trying to depict; they certainly saw things differently.  Although the recent paintings, like the sailing ship is a great depiction of just that.

By the time we got back to the vehicle, it was almost time for lunch, and we were both ready for food. Home we went, had some lunch, then a little rest.

After an afternoon cuppa, we hit the bikes to stretch any soreness out of the legs, and did a short 8 km around town and back. We had dinner at a Thai restaurant all the way out here at Jabiru and it was jolly good food, although it should have been for the prices. We both waddled away, very thankful for the walk we had to do to the restaurant and back.

Today is what a day in the Kakadu should be like, great culture, fine art and amazing scenery.  And everything open.

No sign of the blood moon this morning, in fact, it was not very red last night either (read that it would be better on the East coast)

There were many wildflowers, but could only capture these two as the others are too small for the iPhone.

Wrap-up and Reflections

We have been so busy since arriving home that it has taken us two weeks to get around to our ‘wrap up’ of the trip.   It was so nice to be...
