Day 78: Wed 7 Jul - Free camp to Free Camp (Mt Robinson Rest Area), 221 km; total towed: 7 860 km

11-21 degC, still a bit windy

We were the only ones at the camp spot until about 7pm when a family of four arrived. They were a fair way from us and made very little sound, which was good. We spent a lovely peaceful hour or so stargazing.  Eventually it started to get a tad fresh, so we retired to the van.

We were in no particular hurry to get away this morning, so we both did our walks, had a leisurely breakfast, de-camped, and set off on the road (yet another perfect WA road) again just after 8:30 am. About an hour later we stopped at a pull off to have mornos.

When we arrived at the outskirts of Auski, we were met with traffic congestion. They were doing up the road between the beautiful mountain ranges.   After we got the go sign we got stuck behind a big truck doing 60-70 km/h, so it was a slow trip for a while.   Not that it worried us as we were having a great time looking at all the different rock formations.  The scenery today was some of the best we have seen during the whole time we've been traveling around Oz, and that's saying something.  We arrived at Mt Robinson Rest Area about 12:30pm, a little later than expected because of the roadworks.

This free camp is about 110 km from Newman and is huge. The only thing you must be careful of is the really prickly spinifex and lose rocks which look like iron ore. It has toilets and really good Telstra reception, well it was good until another 12 vans turned up.

After lunch and a rest, Greg went for a walk up the mountain behind us, whilst Wendy caught up on some admin.  He first walked up a really secluded, small gorge and then made his way up the back of the mountain you can see from our campsite.  The campsite side of the mountain was fairly steep but ok to walk down back to camp.  The caves and the gorges were filled with interesting landscapes and flora and he was the only person there the whole time.

One of the 3,000 truck trips (our guessimation) which occur on this road every day

Yet another one of those long trucks

Whatever this is, it is BIG, had to pull right off the road

This machine eats chunks out of the road to make audible lines

The mother-ship resupplying the van with water - we have a 160 l water tank in the back of the Cruiser

Wrap-up and Reflections

We have been so busy since arriving home that it has taken us two weeks to get around to our ‘wrap up’ of the trip.   It was so nice to be...
