Day 117: Sun 15 Aug - Barkly Homestead to Free Camp (WW2 Memorial, just West of Mt Isa), 396 km; total towed: 13 838 km

14-30 deg C, another gorgeous day, marred slightly by the incessant wind

As Greg was still full from his huge Chicken Mexican schnitzel last night, we were on the road at 7:30 am after our coffees. Breakfast was had at the Wonarah Bore rest area, and mornos at the Soudan Bore Rest Area (we have to put theses names in to remember the areas for next time we are on this road).

The NT-QLD border was not far away.  We had prepared Border Passes and every conceivable piece of evidence to show that we had not been in any hotspots or states with COVID.  Wendy had it all laid out ready for the border officer.   But when we reached the Border there was no one checking people arriving from the NT.   The NT Police had a roadblock up for the traffic heading West.   Feeling a tad ripped off now; we surmised that there may be a QLD check point at Camooweal, so kept all the papers together.  When we got there, same thing, nothing.  Anyway, we were very pleased and relieved that we are now back in QLD; we can relax a little and slow down.

We elected not to refuel at Barkly, simply because we knew we had enough to get to Camooweal. On a Sunday, there is only one servo open at Camooweal (the PUMA) and the queue was long. As we got closer to the front, the guy in front pulled out of the queue and went to the left of all the others; he had a Cruiser with the fuel filler on the driver's side, and all the others had to go right. So we bypassed four other vans and followed him. We saved at least 20 mins.

We were back on the road heading East, and decided we did not need to stop for lunch until we got to our overnight destination. When we eventually arrived just before 2 pm, we were quite ready for lunch. A little rest was had before our afternoon routine of a cuppa, exercises and blogging.

When we arrived at this FC, there were about five RVs and now there are about 30.  However, the area is large and can accommodate another 10 without feeling like you are in a caravan park. It has toilets as well, not flash ones, just long drops. Some are a bit smelly as some people don't understand the concept and leave the lid open.

The drive today was a little lumpy in places, especially the closer we got to the NT-QLD border.  However as soon as we crossed into QLD the road smoothed out nicely.   The wind continued to be head on, or from the side but it didn’t slow us down at all.  The land is looking a little browner than it was when we were here in May this year.   The cattle look like they’re doing okay still though.

  1. Welcome back to the sunny state. We enjoyed a stay over where you are too a few years ago. See you in a couple of weeks.
